Pure Grit: How American World War IINurses Survived Battle And Prison Camp In The Pacific In 1941 Army and Navy nurses serving in the Philippines suddenly found themselves in a war zone treating injured and dying soldiers in makeshift hospitals in the jungle. Soon, things got worse as the nurses were captured and kept as prisoners of war in deplorable conditions, battling disease and starvation while still treating and helping anyone (including their captors) who needed medical attention. Amazingly, all 101 captured nurses ended up coming home alive.
